Things to Serve With your Bajan Fried Chicken
Chances are if you have been to Barbados you sampled some of the delicious fare, like bajan fried chicken. Many people who visit Barbados want to cook up and serve a delicious bajan feast to impress their family and friends. Making bajan fried chicken isn't difficult, but figuring out exactly what to serve with it is a whole other story. It is important that your side dishes perfectly compliment your bajan fried chicken so that your meal goes over successfully.
Curried Vegetables
The ideal side dish to serve with bajan fried chicken is curried vegetables. Curried vegetables have the same island flavor and appeal that the bajan chicken does so they compliment the dish perfectly. You will want to use vegetables that are appropriate for the type of dish you are cooking and not just curry and vegetable combination. Some of the vegetables that you may want to consider would include, yellow onion, carrots, green pepper, celery, peas, cauliflower, potato, and squash. You will also want to add mushrooms and garlic cloves to the mix.
Bajan Rice
When you are serving your friends and family bajan fried chicken another perfectly matched side dish would be rice. You can make plain white or brown rice and simply serve your chicken over top of your rice, but you can also make a traditional bajan rice dish to serve with your dish. To make this, you would cook your rice with a little bit of bajan seasoning and mix it with black eyed peas and parsley. Generally brown rice is used to make this, but if you prefer white rice that works as well.
Fruit Salad
Another dish commonly served with bajan fried chicken is fruit salad. Fruit salad is very big in the islands for obvious reasons and it compliments bajan friend chicken perfectly. To make the perfect island style fruit salad you will need to choose the right fruits. You will want to choose fruits like, mango, papaya, pineapple and other tropical fruits. To make the perfect fruit salad to eat with your bajan fried chicken you will dice your tropical fruits up and put them all in a large bowl. Once all the fruit is in the bowl you will add about a half of a cup of orange juice for added island flavor.
Candied Sweet Potatoes
Candied sweet potatoes are another popular bajan dish that compliments bajan fried chicken perfectly. We already make this dish frequently in the United States so it is not a hard dish to make for most of us. To give it an authentic island flare you can mash the sweet potatoes and top them with sweet pineapples and cherries. In Barbados they make them diced and mashed, but the mashed with fruit topping is a little more unique to bajan cooking.
